What the Compressor Does and Why It Is the Most Expensive Component to Replace

The compressor circulates refrigerant under pressure through the system. Without it functioning correctly, heat cannot be moved out of the trailer and temperature control is gone. If the trailer is programmed to hold 34 degrees and the readout is showing 40 or 42 degrees with the unit running and doors closed, something is failing in the refrigeration cycle. A unit that cannot pull down to its set point under normal conditions is not a unit to load without a diagnostic.

Refrigerant loss is often the first cause to check, but a compressor losing output pressure produces the same symptom. The temperature drift tells you the system is failing to move heat. The diagnostic tells you why. Running more loads through a unit showing this sign accelerates whatever the underlying failure is.

Warning Sign 2: The Unit Runs Continuously Without Cycling Off

A healthy reefer unit reaches its set point and cycles into standby. A unit that runs without stopping is working harder than it should. That sustained effort accelerates wear on the compressor faster than a normal operating cycle, and in Texas summer heat, where the system is already under increased thermal load, the wear compounds quickly.

Continuous running typically points to refrigerant loss, a dirty condenser restricting airflow, or a compressor losing efficiency. In Dallas conditions, a clogged condenser coil alone can push a unit into continuous run mode. The condenser is worth cleaning and inspecting first. But if the unit still will not cycle off after that, the compressor is the next place to look.


Warning Sign 3: Unusual Noise From the Compressor

Knocking, rattling, or any noticeable change in the sound the compressor makes during operation is not something to monitor and see how it develops. Mechanical wear inside the compressor often shows up as sound before it appears on any diagnostic readout or triggers an alarm. By the time an alarm code is generated by compressor wear, the damage is usually already significant.

Warning Sign 4: High Discharge Pressure Alarm

A high discharge pressure alarm means refrigerant leaving the compressor is at a pressure above the normal operating range. In Dallas summers, this commonly comes from a dirty or restricted condenser coil, and cleaning the coil often resolves the alarm in those cases.

If the coil is clean and the alarm persists or returns after reset, it may point to a compressor problem, a refrigerant overcharge, or a failing condenser fan. A compressor running against sustained high discharge pressure is under mechanical stress that shortens its service life and can lead to a complete failure on the next loaded haul.


Warning Sign 5: Higher Fuel Consumption From the Reefer Tank

The reefer unit runs on its own fuel supply, separate from the truck engine. If fuel is burning faster than normal without a change in haul type, load temperature, or route conditions, the system is working harder than it should. This signal is easy to miss in day-to-day operation, but a noticeable increase in reefer fuel consumption without an obvious reason warrants a diagnostic before it becomes a breakdown.
